Manufacture cavity dies

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to prepare to manufacture and manufacture cavity dies, including matching use of hand and hand held power tools, assembly of the tooling components and trialling the tooling.

Where the selection and use of welding processes are required select appropriate units.

Where brazing or silver soldering is required unit MEM05006 Perform brazing and/or silver soldering should also be selected.

Where manufacture of press tools and gauges is required unit MEM18014 Manufacture press tools and gauges should also be selected.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Band: A

Unit Weight: 8

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assingnment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This field allows for different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Tooling includes one (1) or more of the following:

forging dies

extruding dies

die casting (high and low pressure and gravity feed)

plastic moulds (injection, compression, blow and foam)

glass moulds

dies requiring precision manufacture

Tool room equipment includes one (1) or more of the following:

lathes

mills

copy/duplicator

grinders

electrical discharge machining (EDM) and wire cut equipment

precision measurement

hand and power tools

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Observation Checklist

Tasks to be observed according to workplace/college/TAFE policy and procedures, relevant legislation and Codes of Practice Yes No Comments/feedback
Select and obtain appropriate materials to meet tooling requirements for strength, durability, component finish and heat treatment qualities, where necessary, and account for materials availability
Test selected material for hardness, as appropriate, to aid selection of machine tools, hand tools and hand held power tools to be used to fashion or shape tooling components
Develop plan to sequence and stage manufacturing process, including establishing datum, mark out, rough out (machine or fashion), stress relieve/heat treat, finish size, fashion and fit and assemble componentry
Check first-off component with precision instruments against specification
Modify tooling to produce components to specification, as necessary
Re-trial modified tooling and produce component
Verify conformance to specification and report according to SOPs
Record all deviations or modifications to original tooling design, prints or plans and report according to SOPs
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Determine tooling requirements from customer's components drawings, prints or sample component
